I can see this device in the Device Manager GUI. I attached my USB-2-Serial adapter into the USB port on my laptop.

In such case, you need a serial to console port cable. In addition, many newer Routerboards are equipped with a RJ45 based terminal port, the same to those used on any Cisco network devices. The process is a slightly different and I will explain that part in another post. In the case that you have one of those Routerboards in the plastic case, you don’t need a null-modem cable, as they don’t possess any COM port. It’s much better to have its link always up. The reason to use this switch is that we will need to reboot our MikroTik a few times and every time our PC will lose the link. Even better, those small 5/8 port desktop switches can be easily bring around in your backpack. Any other feature is completely irrelevant. It’s only important that this switch can provide you with the stable and fast network connections. The third situation is not so common today, but you can still use this method to install RouterOS on the removable media, like a micro SD or CF card.

At the end, such device was completely unstable. The second common reason was that that device worked in harsh environment and it was improperly too often rebooted, with a great probability that it also was shocked with unstable power. The most common reason was to remove the configuration of ye olde device, which password is forgotten in time. So far, I had a need to netinstall a few Routerboards. There are situations when we need to install MikroTik RouterOS on our Routerboard (or a removable media, like CF card).
